AI Future Insights from Nandan Nilekani: Decentralized Storage and Data Centers

At the Global Technology Summit 2023 held at New Delhi, I got an opportunity to ask one question on Decentralized Storage vs Data Centres to Nandan Nilekani,Founding Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Privacy Concerns & Server Locations : Hike-Telegram-Whatspp

1.    I have always seen and observed discussions amongst my friends and circle about which Chat Messenger is safe and which is not in terms of safety and privacy aspects.Whether the servers are located inside the country or they are off-shores,how their data is shared and how is their privacy likely to be compromised bu third parties.....So to just do a over view check, here I present an over view of such FAQs in context of Server Locations and data sharing aspects, primarily sourced from the original websites.

DATA CENTER's : THE INDIAN SCENE

1.   The phenomenal growth of data in India is rapidly evolving but where is all that data being stored?.....not a big deal to find out that all your FB profiles, your friends list, Google hangout circle of friends and all the enumerable social networking sites on the web stores your data across the globe but not in India....yes that's the truth...every bit of data that your profile holds is actually residing off shores ...what India might be holding is just logs of transaction via various monitoring eyes like CMS as discussed in last post!!!

2.   But actually what debar's any big company with a global presence to set up a data center in apna India...recently there have a explosion of many posts across the web o sphere citing the query of why is it so?...the reasons cited culminate on one reason and that's known as SECURITY....the non existence of "DATA PRIVACY LAWs" in India.....more over the fact that there is presently no existence of GIS routing of laid OFCs and cables maps though there are always plans and proposals for the future. The problem of underground OFC in and around NCR is such that companies are afraid to commit 100% availability of up time because your OFC can get damaged any time owing to so many under construction sites in NCR with dozers digging out OFC like Hollywood monsters. And these diggings are ever to continue coz still there are no laid down GIS mappings that can accurately predict the route and depth of laid out OFCs....and the most important I feel is the promise of state ELECTRIC POWER supply which is surely unreliable during any season....it is indeed surprising that power is still an issue in NCR towns!!!

3.   The future will always remains bright because we always have plans to remove all these problem areas but how and when remains a futuristic answer.GIS routing of cables is an imminent need and so are the data protection laws.By default as on date most of the data centres are coming up in Singapore.

"Singapore offers an ideal combination of reliable infrastructure, a skilled workforce and a commitment to transparent and business-friendly regulations" is how Google explains its choice of the city. Oracle cites "excellent telecommunications infrastructure and efficient, well-qualified manpower".

Much like India set up software technology parks to nurture its IT services and BPO industry, Singapore is setting up a 13-hectare Data Center Park and inviting companies from across the world. It already has some 20 data centre hubs and offers tax and other incentives.

McMurdo station & more DATA CENTRE Locations

1.    We all keep reading on issues like heating when we discuss data centres......now with the problems that datacenters have with cooling, the Antarctic is perhaps the ideal site for such a facility....i thought that was a joke before i first read about this and saw the pics on site at here

2.     The station's datacentre is dedicated to supporting scientific work and running the station - with 64 servers and more than 2PB of storage connected to hundreds of desktops by a gigabit Ethernet network.McMurdo Station is the telecoms hub for science projects, field camps and operations in western Antarctica funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).To provide these services, it has a central telephone exchange and a wide spectrum of network, radio-frequency and satellite-communication systems. At the South Pole, every day up to 100GB of science data is transferred from the station to the US via satellite-communication links in support of multiple NSF-funded science projects.

3.    Thanks DIGIT.

COWS & DATA CENTRES : LINKED!!!!

1. Cows and data centers ???Whats the link.......any guesses....strange you may find but this has come from HP who feel that both entities are connected...read on for the link///

2. According to HP Labs, the estimate dairy cow produced is about 55 kg of manure per day, and thus 20 metric tons per year. The manure that one dairy cow produces in a day can generate 3.0 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical energy.A medium-sized dairy farm with 10,000 cows produces about 200,000 metric tons of manure per year. This farm can fulfill the power requirements of a medium sized 1 megawatt (MW) data center. The heat generated by the data center need not be wasted. Instead, it can be used to break down animal waste which results in the production of methane.Methane can then be used to generate power for the data center.HP Labs researchers say that this symbiotic relationship allows the waste problems faced by dairy farms and the energy demands of the modern data center to be addressed in a sustainable manner.

3. Actually HP should have not just come up with the idea...with the strong hold they have in the market..it would have more suited them to actually attempt the same on ground rather then advising and making statistical data of the dung!!!!
