SPLIT LARGE FILES INTO SMALLER PARTS & MERGE : FOR EASY MIGRATION in LINUX SYSTEMS

1.    Routine troubleshooting in system handling gives us a way to explore and try new options.Recently tried a new way to migrate large files(around ~17 GB in my case here ). Although there are easier options available by simply copying in a external device, but in my case external devices were not allowed so attempted to split the large file into 3 GB size files and then finally could merge them....and could also verify the hash....and it was absolutely right...sharing few screen shots :

2.    The entire thing of splitting and merging gets over in simple two commands of SPLIT & CAT

 > split -b file.name
 > cat x* > file.name

3.   I have a .vdi virtual image file which is approx 16 GB in size. The file details are seen in the screen shot below :

Here ..before I go for the split...I have taken the hash of the same to compare it later after i merge the split parts...to check the originality of files and I get the hash of the file as bb867749cf4c0325abe145a0998e3b04

In the screen shot below I use the split command, which is inbuilt to UBUNTU and typically all Linux systems....I split the file in 3GB parts...

This screen shot shows the watch screen shot of the populating split parts...

This screen shot shows the watch screen shot of the populating split parts...

and here i get the final .vdi file as well m able to match the hash as same ie bb867749cf4c0325abe145a0998e3b04

Installing Dongle on Ubuntu : Mobile Internet@USB MODEM

1.   Writing after a long time... I post here few lines that I recently learnt on installing and accessing internet vide Dongle with SIM on Ubuntu LTS 12.04.So in my case I have a Micromax dongle with a mobile Sim.

2.  Simply said the steps are mentioned below :

- Insert the USB dongle in any of the USB drives on your PC/Laptop.

- Goto Terminal and login as Root

- At the terminal get the details of the usb detected interfaces by typing lsusb

- So in my case the dongle detected is shown at the end ie OMEGA TECHNOLOGY

- Now we need to run a terminal command to mount the device and get it running as shown in the screen shot below
sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1c9e product=0x9605

- Once the command is executed at the terminal, wait for few minutes and you see the additional ENABLE MOBILE BROADBAND as seen in the screen shot below....

3.   and with this you should be on with the internet....

Fedora 19 USB automount doesn't work : SOLVED

Having installed Fedora 19 Schrodinger's Cat recently, a problem came up that the USB that used to get auto detected in earlier versions stopped working......and could not be seen anywhere in the file manager...and the disk showed the following screen which has no USB disk.

(CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO ENLARGE)

But the good thing is that on doing LSUSB at the terminal it was being shown as follows :

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 4033:0042 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 4051:0030 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 3d4b:0008 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1f6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0f6d:081b Logitech, Inc. Webcam C310
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0c61:4d0f Primax Electronics, Ltd HP Optical Mouse
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 03f0:5201 Sandisk

so mounted it the terminal way..

make a directory in home by the name of usb

mkdir usb

and

at the terminal type lsblk that will give you where to mount. In my case it is sdc1. My output comes as follows :

NAME            MAJ:MIN RM   SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda               8:0    0 931.5G  0 disk
├─sda1            8:1    0 488.3G  0 part
└─sda2            8:2    0 443.2G  0 part
sdb               8:16   0 465.8G  0 disk
├─sdb1            8:17   0   100M  0 part
├─sdb2            8:18   0   500M  0 part /boot
└─sdb3            8:19   0 465.2G  0 part
  ├─fedora-swap 253:0    0   5.8G  0 lvm  [SWAP]
  ├─fedora-root 253:1    0    50G  0 lvm  /
  └─fedora-home 253:2    0 409.4G  0 lvm  /home
sdc               8:32   1    30G  0 disk
└─sdc1            8:33   1    30G  0 part /home/kalama/usb
sr0              11:0    1  1024M  0 rom

now at the terminal simply type

mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /home/kalama/usb/

thats it ..now it will start showing when you do df -h as shown below :

[root@localhost ~]# df -h
Filesystem               Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/fedora-root   50G  4.8G   42G  11% /

tmpfs                    2.9G  664K  2.9G   1% /dev/shm
tmpfs                    2.9G  968K  2.9G   1% /run

TRUE CRYPT IN FEDORA 17: INSTALLATION

1.   The earlier version of Fedora had some token issues to deal with while installing True Crypt but not with this Fedora 17 Beefy Miracle.

2.   Few commands to be run from root after downloading the requisite version from the True Crypt site go as follows :

tar xvf truecrypt-7.1a-linux-x86.tar.gz

yum install nss-pkcs11-devel fuse-devel wxGTK wxGTK-devel

yum load-transaction /tmp/yum_save_tx.2012-12-13.14-20.laXbNn.yumtx

yum install gnome-keyring-devel gcc-c++

export PKCS11_INC=/usr/include/gp11

./truecrypt-7.1a-setup-x86

3.   Well if there are some token issues like shown below :

../Common/SecurityToken.cpp:660: error: ‘CKR_NEW_PIN_MODE’ was not declared in this scope
../Common/SecurityToken.cpp:661: error: ‘CKR_NEXT_OTP’ was not declared in this scope

then you need to Open Common/SecurityToken.cpp in any editor and Scroll to line 660 and simply Comment out line 660 and 661. It should look like this after you edit:

//TC_TOKEN_ERR (CKR_NEW_PIN_MODE)
//TC_TOKEN_ERR (CKR_NEXT_OTP)

Print to PDF in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

1.     This is a simple single line of command that u write at the terminal to install a third party app that will install a pdf printer in ur Ubuntu System.
sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

2.     This will be generally handy when u need to print your documents that are ready to print but u don't have a printer installed....actually create a virtual PDF printer on your ubuntu PC that lets you convert all your documents/images/anything into PDFs that you can subsequently send to print as and when u have the facility to print.

3.    Thanks http://ubuntuportal.com
