Setting up Metasploit on a BackTrack5 R3 VM with SSH connectivity@Putty

1.    Setting this up is a simple thing till the time you know how to do it...here I bring you a step by step thing of how you putty to a Backtrack5 v3 machine installed in a Virtual Box from a Ubuntu host OS....

2.    First thing is configuring a additional network card on the BTR3 machine.Select the virtual machine and click on Settings, then move to Network settings and then in the Network adapter, there will be a pre-installed NAT adapter for internet usage of the host machine.Under Adapter 2 select Host only Adapter.

Adapter 1 Default Configuration
 Adapter 2 to be Configured
Before you get ready to ssh...u need to ensure that ssh service is running in Backtrack...which by default is not...run the terminal commands as seen below in the screen shots...

ifconfig as seen at terminal of the Backtrack R3 machine
Putty to IP of the Backtrack Machine
Putty successfully asks for login as seen below :

 Login with Backtrack credentials :
Here  above we get the msfconsole...ready to accept the commands....

Testing UBUNTU for SHELLSHOCK vulnerability

Shellshock, the now famous vulnerability in GNU's bash shell that gives attackers access to run remote commands on a vulnerable system. If your system has not updated bash in since Tue Sep 30 2014: 1:32PM EST , you're most definitely vulnerable and have been since first boot. This security vulnerability affects versions 1.14 (released in 1994) to the most recent version 4.3.Its always good to at least close known bugs and holes since zero vulnerabilities always exist....here i bring out few ready made cut/paste terminal commands to test your UBUNTU...This simply involves running of a script shellshock_test.sh.Source code at https://github.com/wreiske/shellshocker/blob/master/shellshock_test.sh

Screen shot shown below as run from my system :

Terminal cmd : curl https://shellshocker.net/shellshock_test.sh | bash

Attacks@Image WaterMarking

1.    We keep exploring new grounds but also without realizing the pits it offers,we start playing games on it.Such is the world of IT,we keep discovering so many new technologies to strengthen and exploit for our use and we keep ourselves vulnerable!!!!

2.   Without wasting more words, this post would briefly mention about Image water marking and the type of attacks it remains vulnerable to.So first whats Image Water Marking??...an easy way to describe digital watermark is simply comparing it to a traditional paper watermark or a power point water mark which most of us might have even used at some point of time.Like Traditional watermarks offer proof of authenticity by being imperceptible, digital watermarks offer a way that allows a computer to read the mark but not by the human 6/6 eye....there are actually four essential parameters which are commonly used to determine the quality of water marking these are :

- Robustness
- Imperceptibility
- Payload
- Security

3.   Now each of these parameters has a unique characteristic that makes the purpose of image water marking strong and adaptable. So when we speak about attacks on image water marking...the attacks again are classified as :

- Image Compression Attack : Primarily used to reduce the size of image in transmission. The original image remains most of it that it was but requires lesser bandwidth to move.

- Image Contrast Attack : To a human eye a slight change in contrast of colors makes a huge difference in overall perception

- Cropping Attack : A part of image gets cropped from original

Re sizing Attack : The image gets re sized from the original coords

- Rotation Attack : A simple clockwise or a anticlockwise attack would rotate the image from its original coords

Another categorization of the image water marking attacks contains four classes :(Source here : Abhishek Goswami)

Removal Attacks : Aim at the complete removal of the watermark information from the watermarked data without cracking the security of the watermarking algorithm

Geometric Attacks : Do not actually remove the embedded watermark itself, but intend to distort the watermark detector synchronization with the embedded information.

Cryptographic Attacks : Cryptographic attacks aim at cracking the security methods in watermarking schemes and thus finding a way to remove the embedded watermark information or to embed misleading
watermarks.

Protocol Attacks : Aim at attacking the entire concept of the watermarking application. This type of attack is based on the concept of invertible watermarks. The idea behind inversion is that the attacker subtracts his own watermark from the watermarked data and claims to be the owner of the watermarked data. This can create ambiguity with respect to the true ownership of the data.

DAEDALUS : Monitor Cyber-Attacks Realtime 3D way

1.    Whether it is the Die Hard ver 4.0 movie scene or Mission impossible recent one or any hi tech cyber movie....we have have all seen the mega sized dark halls equipped with gigantic screen displaying all sorts of real time ridiculous hacker related information and monitoring tracks of the enemy or the protagonist....so how good or effective or even real are these in the real sense....can some thing like these seen and shown over years on the silver screen be REAL....yesss...first watch this video and then read few points as bought out below :

2.   A company in Japan named NICT just unveiled a system dubbed Daedalus that will revolutionize the way companies and even countries can monitor cyber-attacks in full real time 3D representation. The key features about this is bought out as below :

- Daedalus is not only a way to monitor cyber-attacks from outside, but also what’s going on inside it.

- So if someone receives an email with a virus for example, the system can quickly identify the IP address that is currently spreading it and shut it down immediately.

- The NICT recently gave a demonstration and tracked 190,000 IP addresses in real-time

- Daedalus can monitor multiple entities at once and get notified, once again, via 3D graphical representation when a cyber-attack occurs.

- This is not only when it happens, but instantly where it happens and who the attacker is.

3.      So when the objective is envisaged on a higher scale....ie the complete global internet monitoring.....will this be the start to control spam(90% of mails exchanged on the web is spam)....or will this be able to control cyber attacks across.....well not a bad start to a start whose objective is MISSION IMPOSSIBLE type...another thing that may have come to your mind is about the name...of all what does Daedalus mean?...well in Greek mythology, Daedalus means "Clever Worker"

BOY in the BROWSER attack

1.  Funny names keep propping up...and keep getting accepted too...first it was Man in the Middle attack....then Man in the Browser...and now comes Boy in the Browser attack....actually, is a trojan that reroutes its victim's web traffic information through an attacker’s proxy site.  ....a cool video here explains it in a simple language....

ANKIT FADIA @ INDORE 19 FEB 2012

1.   The Sunday that was@ Ethical Hacking Workshop by Ankit Fadia Indore....is all I have to say now after a great great lively interactive (with demonstration) workshop with Ankit Fadia at Indore here...right from 10 in the morning to 1810h in the evening. This was my second workshop with him and this guy is only improving from his own earlier version for much better. The best thing about him is that he keeps it very very simple to understand for those who wish to.....and tops it with simple demos which actually make the thing go in the mind.Last I attended him at Adobe.

2.  I would always recommend all the young techo enthusiasts across not to miss attending any of his workshops if he is in your town.He never wastes a moment....never takes any unnecessary breaks in between...no calls....all for you...the best part....he is so down to earth...no frillls......grt....for now I will start reading so many new things and terms that I got introduced owing to him......

3.  Thanks Ankit....and all the best!!!

OIL & GAS : CYBER HACKED

1.    McAfee has recently revealed and confirmed about computer hacking on un-named global oil, gas and petrochemical companies, and individuals and executives in Taiwan, Greece, and the United States, to acquire proprietary and confidential information. This has also been confirmed by five oil and gas companies that had  that the attacks took place, and the attackers were looking for documents about oil and gas exploration and bidding contracts. The source of the attack as usual has been found to be from 'several locations in China'.(Is there any thing new about this ?????)

2.    Oil companies expect such attacks getting more frequent and more meticulously planned. The determination and stamina shown by some modern hackers has increased and there are more multi-pronged, co-ordinated attacks.

3.    Hackers have started bombarding the world's computer controlled energy sector, conducting industrial espionage and threatening potential global havoc through oil supply disruption.Since Computers control a relatively high percentage distribution in systems, thus are increasingly becoming vulnerable to cyber attacks that could put fuel production technology in the docks!!!

4.    The issue is indeed alarming and needs urgent attention at global level. It is not that my country is not effected or why should I be bothered ?We all are going be effected in the long run because we all r users and part of the last mile chain.Stuxnet,Duqu etc are some of the culprit virus which have been caught doing the action. What about the other thousands and may be millions who are already into action in the background.Japan has recently come up with the good virus ie CYBER WEAPON.Now this one acts like a immunization pill.It resists the virus.About 3 yrs and few billlion dollars have gone into the making. This is just the beginning and I am sure in the rat-cat race aka the good/bad guys of the cyber space there will be moments when the cyber crime over shadows the strengths of cyber power...but its upto the overall cohesive planning that all countries have to work together at the earliest. If late, there will be no other chance.Hackers are already doing it together as one team.....but we all act as teams of different nations.....we should be one GLOBAL TEAM!!!!

5.   Thanks  http://www.mcafee.com

Is ur Account Hacked ?- Common ways u get compromised.

1.    There is no doubt on the fact that Google users are growing phenomenally.....and with this growing rise also comes the phenomenal rise and ways to get compromised or become a botnet. Thus a Google Account is also valuable for spammers and other unknown citizenry looking to impair you with ur personal info and data on ur pc and account inbox. It’s not so much about your account, but rather the fact that your circle of relatives and friends see your Google Account and mails from it as reliable.

2.   Nothing new about this but the most common ways hackers can login to your Google password are:
  • Password re-use: You sign up for an account on a third-party site with your Google username and password. If that site is hacked and your sign-in information is discovered, the hijacker has easy access to your Google Account.
  • Malware: You use a computer with infected software that is designed to steal your passwords as you type (“keylogging”) or grab them from your browser’s cache data.
  • Phishing: You respond to a website, email, or phone call that claims to come from a legitimate organization and asks for your username and password.
  • Brute force: You use a password that’s easy to guess, like your first or last name plus your birth date (“ujjwal3008”), or you provide an answer to a secret question that’s common and therefore easy to guess, like “dosa” for “What is your favorite food?”
3.   Another common error that we all unknowingly is that we keep the password same for multiple accounts on yahoo, gmail, blumail and so on.......put on ur thinking caps......if one account linked to other user name is compromised ....then in a way all are....

RISK MANAGEMENT : Beware while u update with Patches

1. A zero-day exploit as discussed at an earlier post in this blog .....Some thing more to it...

2. A good extract straight lift from Infosecurity-magazine.com

"For a vendor, developing the update is not the part that takes time – testing is. We have more than 600 million downloads when we publish an update. If we “just” break 10% of the systems the update is installed, it would be a huge denial of service. So testing is the name of the game. How well is an unofficial patch tested?Often the vendor publishes workarounds (at least we do). This should be part of your risk mitigation strategy. Would the workaround be acceptable to buy you time?

How far do you trust the author of the unofficial update? How big is the risk that the update comes with pre-installed malware? The question immediately comes up: Why should we trust a vendor? Well, you bought or downloaded the software at the first hand – so, you decided to trust the vendor at the beginning.

What do you do once the vendor releases an update? Can you de-install the unofficial update?

Basically, it is a risk management decision, which should include at least the questions I raised above. Do not just run for the unofficial update – to me it should be really the last resort, if even!"

ZERO DAY EXPLOIT : ???

1. While reading an article on Browser Forensics, came across this term "0-day" exploit....whats it all about?

2. A zero day exploit is a malevolent computer attack that takes capitalizes on a security hole before the vulnerability is known. This means the security issue is made known the same day as the computer attack is made. In other words, the software developer has zero days to prepare for the security breach and must work as quickly as possible to develop a patch or update that fixes the problem. This occurs on or before the first or "zeroth" day of developer awareness, meaning the developer has not had any opportunity to distribute a security fix to users of the software.

3. Zero day exploits may involve viruses, trojan horses, worms or other malicious code that can be run within a software program. While most programs do not allow unauthorized code to be executed, hackers can sometimes create files that will cause a program to perform functions unintended by the developer. Programs like Web browsers and media players are often targeted by hackers because they can receive files from the Internet and have access to system functions. While most zero day exploits may not cause serious damage to your system, some may be able to corrupt or delete files. Because the security hole is made known the same day the attack is released, zero day exploits are difficult to prevent, even if you have antivirus software installed on your computer. Therefore, it is always good to keep a backup of your data in a safe place so that no hacker attack can cause you to lose your data.

Man in the Browser Attack : New dimension of cyber attack

1. The name is interesting though and so is the working behind....MITB (Man in the Browser) attacks are designed by fraudsters to infect a web browser with malware which can result in mmodified web pages and transactions that are largely transparent to both the user and the host application.Trojans incl Silent Banker,Sinowal etc are pre programmed by fraudsters to activate when the user browser accesses a specific website such as their online banking portal. The activated trojan can then track the online session and perform real time interception etc that can lead to illegal money transfers, identity theft and further compromise on the users personal info.

2. The Man-in-the-Browser attack is the same approach as Man-in-the-middle attack, but in this case a Trojan Horse is used to intercept and manipulate calls between the browser and its security mechanisms or libraries in real time.A MitB attack will be successful irrespective of whether security mechanisms such as SSL/PKI and/or Two or Three Factor Authentication solutions are in place.
